The Stony Brook softball team swept a doubleheader over Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Seawolves won Game 1, 11-8, and won Game 2, 3-2. With the two wins the Seawolves improve to 22-13 overall and 9-3 in America East play. Binghamton falls to 5-24, 1-11.
The Seawolves opened up a 7-0 lead in Game 1 after plating five runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Kelly Oberto, Jade Clare, Sara Cerrone and Ashley Westphal all drove in runs as the Seawolves seemed in control.
Over the next two innings the Bearcats outscored the Seawolves 8-1 as they knotted the game up at 8-8 through five innings. The Bearcats plated six runs in the fifth capped by a three-run double off the bat of Stephanie Woodcock.
The Seawolves took advantage of two passed balls and a Bearcat error in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs and grab an 11-8 lead. Alyssa Struzenberg came off the bench and collected her second save of the year as she didn't allow a run in the final two innings.
In Game 2, Kelsi Fanelli delivered the game-winning solo shot in the fifth inning as Stony Brook edged Binghamton, 3-2. Struzenberg continued her solid day in the circle as she threw a complete game, allowing only two runs with 12 strikeouts as the Seawolves completed the sweep.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow when they finish their series with Binghamton at noon.
