Albany scored two runs in the top of the ninth as the Stony Brook baseball team lost a heartbreaker at University Field, 8-7. The loss drops the Seawolves to 17-16 overall and 8-3 in America East play. Albany moves to 15-19, 2-6.
Trailing 7-6 heading into the ninth inning, UAlbany ralled to score two runs in the top of the ninth to take an 8-7 lead. With one out and runners on first and second, Leo Corvino singled to right field to plate Phil Marchese and even the game up at 7-7. Steve Wyland hit a slow roller to third and beat out the double play as he scored Zac Halloran with a fielder's choice as UAlbany led 8-7.
In the bottom half of the ninth, the Seawolves loaded the bases with no outs after bunt singles from Keith Fier, Brian Witkowski and Chris Sipp. Albany recored its first out of the inning when Fier was out at home following a failed squeeze attempt. Alexander Beaulieu induced a Steven Mazzurco pop out and then struck out Rob Leonard to end the game as Albany held on for the 8-7 win.
Leonard (0-2) shouldered the loss for Stony Brook, allowing three runs in 3.0 innings of work. Rob Dyer finished the game 1-for-4 with a solo home run, Sipp was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI and Justin Echevarria was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Beaulieu (1-1) earned the win, throwing 2.1 innings of shutout baseball out of the pen. Corvino was 4-for-6 with three runs driven in and one run scored.
The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday, April 24 when they host Long Island rival Hofstra. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
