Amanda Fefel's home run in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the difference in UMBC's 2-1 win over the Stony Brook softball team on Sunday afternoon. Stony Brook drops to 26-17, 10-7 in America East play. UMBC 29-14, 12-6.
After UMBC scored a run in the top of the first, Stony Brook answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Ashley Westphal laced a double down the line in left field and was sacrificed over by Vicki Kavitsky. Kelsi Fanelli grounded out to second, scoring Westphal and tying the game at one.
Fefel hit a home run with one out in the sixth to give the visiting team the lead.
Sarah Hoffman threw a gritty complete-game for the Seawolves in the loss. Hoffman gave up five hits and just two runs, striking out four.
Ashley Gray threw a one-hitter for UMBC.
Stony Brook is back in action when it hosts Marist on Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader. Prior to game one, seniors Samantha Posey, Christina Voth and Sarah Hoffman will be honored in pre-game ceremony.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
