Box Score

Westbury, N.Y. - In its final tune-up before conference play opens up, the Stony Brook baseball team topped Hofstra, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon. Mike Gionesi threw 5.0 solid innings and Rob Leonard drove in two as the Seawolves improve to 8-12 on the year. The loss drops Hofstra to 11-17.

The Seawolves struck early as they plated three runs in the top of the first. Brian Witkowski led off the game with a single and Chris Sipp followed with a walk. Following a double-steal, Leonard ripped a single down the right field line to plate both baserunners. Leonard would later score on a Hofstra miscue as the Seawolves led 3-0.

The Pride responded with a run in the bottom of the frame before Gionesi settled down. After the first inning Gionesi did not allow another run and the Seawolves added a run in the second as they led 4-1 through five innings of play.

The Pride got within one as they scored two in the bottom of the sixth, but Justin Purington and Joffrey Von Nostrand threw two innings of scoreless baseball as the Seawolves held on for the win.

Gionesi (1-0) threw 5.0 innings, allowing only one run with two strikeouts. Von Nostrand threw one scoreless inning for the save.

Leonard led the offense, finishing the day 3-for-5 with a run scored and two driven in. Michael Tansey was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Witkowski was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
