Leonard's Slam Lifts Stony Brook Over Maine

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Rob Leonard's grand slam with two outs in the bottom of fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie as the Stony Brook baseball team topped Maine, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at University Field. Tom Koehler struck out five in 7.0 strong innings as the Seawolves improve to 9-12 overall and 1-0 in America East play. Maine falls to 5-16, 0-1.

With the game all knotted up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Brian Witkowski reached on a bunt single with one out to put runners on first and second. Following a strikeout, Michael Stephan was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

With a 1-0 count, Leonard blasted the Brad Hertzler offering over the fence in right-field fence to give the Seawolves a 7-3 lead.

Koehler worked his way into the eighth inning before turning the game over to Matt Lyons. Lyons worked two hitless frames as the Seawolves held on for the 7-3 win.

Koehler (2-4) struck out five in 7.0 innings of work. Lyons struck out three in 2.0 innings out of the pen.

Leonard led the offense, going 2-for-5 with a grand slam. Justin Echevarria was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and Michael Tansey was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday when they continue their series with Maine. The Seawolves and Black Bears will square off with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
