Leonard Homers Three Times Baseball Splits With UMBC

Baltimore, Md. - The Stony Brook baseball team split a pair of games with UMBC on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves scored four runs in the top of the seventh in a come-from-behind win in Game 1, 8-7, and lost Game 2, 7-3. Rob Leonard hit three home runs on the day as the Seawolves move to 30-22 overall and 15-7 in America East play. UMBC moves to 13-39, 4-19.

In Game 1, the Seawolves rallied for four runs in the seventh to send the game into extra frames and plated the game winning run in the top of the eighth as they won the first game of the doubleheader, 8-7.

Trailing 7-3 entering the final inning, Chris Sipp hit a one-out single and Mike Stephan walked to give the Seawolves runners on first and second with one out. Leonard stepped to the dish and ripped a three-run shot over the left-field fence to pull the Seawolves within one. Following a ground out, Chris Cruz came through in the clutch and blasted a solo shot to knot the game at 7-7 and send it into the eighth.

In the top of the eighth, Keith Fier reached on an error with one out. Fier stole second and advanced to third on a ground out and with two-outs, a Retriever passed ball allowed Fier to race home for the game-winning run. Marc Brown threw a perfect eighth as the Seawolves won Game 1, 8-7.

Brown (2-1) struck out two in three hitless innings out of the bullpen for the win. Leonard finished Game 1, 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored and both Brian Witkowski and Cruz each hit solo home runs.

In the nightcap, UMBC plated three runs in the first and never looked back as the Retrievers won Game 2, 7-3.

Trailing 6-1 in the top of the sixth, the Seawolves pulled within three off of Leonard's second home run of the day. Leonard hit a two-run homer to left-center as the Seawolves trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

UMBC added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as the Retrievers held on for the 7-3 win.

Kurt Jung (7-4) allowed seven runs off of 12 hits in the complete game loss. Leonard was 1-for-2 with a two-run shot and Sipp was 2-for-2 with a run scored and one driven in.

The Seawolves will close out the regular season on Sunday when they take on UMBC. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
