Baseball Falls To Charleston Southern In Series Finale, 10-0

Charleston, S.C. - Cody Higgins hurled a five-hit shutout and the Charleston Southern Buccaneers scored three runs in the second and four runs in the third on its way to a 10-0 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Collins Park. The Seawolves fall to 2-1 with the loss while the Buccaneers improve to 2-6.

Higgins was terrific for CSU, striking out three and walking just three in his complete game effort. Tyler Thornburg tallied three hits and Mike Beattie and Derek Smith added two apiece for the Buccaneers who pounded out 12 hits against three Seawolves pitchers. Freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) led the Seawolves with two hits in four at-bats.

CSU got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Smith hit a double to center and then scored when Will Rodriguez hit a double of his own to left field. Keith Hustedt then drew a walk, bringing Beattie to the plate for the Buccaneers. With two runners on, Beattie hit a single to right center that allowed Rodriguez to score from second. CSU pushed its lead to 3-0 when a single by Cory Trudell allowed Husted to score from second.

The Buccaneers then blew the game open with four runs in the third. Thornburg started the rally with a one-out single to center, advancing to third on Smith's second double of the game. Rodriguez then drew a walk to load the bases for CSU with just one out.

With the squeeze on, Hustedt laid down a bunt that rolled to a stop just inside the first base line as Thornburg slid across home plate. After a a strike out gave the home team two outs, Trudell drew a bases loaded walk that forced Smith in from third and gave the Buccaneers a 5-0 lead. Mark Perry then drove a two-run single up the middle to give Charleston a 7-0 lead.

Junior Mike Errigo (Bayside, N.Y) took the loss for the Seawolves, allowing seven runs and eight hits in 2.2 innings of work.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, March 8th, traveling to take on Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch for the doubleheader is 1 p.m.
