Stony Brook, N.Y. -
A two-run home run over the right-centerfield wall by Maine's Terren Hall was the difference in a 8-6 loss for Stony Brook Sunday at University Field. The loss drops Stony Brook to 12-11-1 on the season while Maine improves to 2-29.
The Seawolves started the game hot, with a leadoff double by senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.). She scored two batters later on a single through the left side by junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.), to give Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
Maine answered back in the third inning, loading the bases on a pair of singles and walk. A double to right-center by Whitney Spangler cleared the bases, giving the Black Bears a 3-1 advantage. Two batters later, Hall hit her first home run of the day to left-center to extend Maine's lead to four runs.
After the Black Bears scored again in the top of the fifth, Stony Brook rallied pushing across five runs in the bottom-half of the inning. The Seawolves loaded the bases on three straight singles by sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hills, N.J.), Fanelli and junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.). Sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) was hit by a pitch to drive in the first run of the inning and then junior Molly Kestranek (St. Mary's, Ga.) cleared the bases with a grand slam to center, knotting the game at 6-6.
The two teams went scoreless over the next six innings, in large part to some great defensively plays by both sides. Maine then had a one-out single by Ashley Waters in the top of the 12th, which was followed up by the Hall's game-winning home run.
Freshman Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) was given the loss after allowing two run in three innings of relief work. Sophomore Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) was solid once again for the Seawolves in relief, allowing one run in just over six innings.
The Seawolves are home again on Tuesday, when they host a doubleheader against Rutgers starting at 3:00 p.m.
