Softball Drops Close One to Seton Hall

March 7, 2008

Box Score

College Park, Md. - Freshman Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) had a gutsy performance in the circle for Stony Brook, allowing just three runs in seven innings, but the Seawolves struggled to get it going offensively as they fell to Seton Hall, 3-1. Stony Brook is 5-5 on the season and will have to wait until tomorrow for their next game as their afternoon contest against Maryland has been postponed due to rain.

After allowing a two-run single to Shannon Pease in the first inning, Matthes settled down allowing just three hits over the next three innings. At the plate, the Seawolves pulled within one run, after junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) led off the third inning with a triple and later scored on an error by Seton Hall's second baseman.

Stony Brook found themselves down, 3-1 in the seventh when they scraped together a two-out rally, starting with a fielder's choice by Fanelli. Junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) then singled to center and sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) walked to load the bases. However, the Pirates' starting pitcher got junior Molly Kestranek (St. Mary's, Ga.) to pop-out to shortstop to end the game.

Stony Brook's next game is Saturday morning at 9 a.m. against Columbia, followed by an 11 a.m. game against Mount St. Mary's.
