Hartford Sweeps Doubleheader From Stony Brook Baseball

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Pete Moraski tossed a seven-hitter as the Hartford Hawks completed a doubleheader sweep of the Stony Brook University baseball team with a 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at University Field. Adam Grap hit the go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning to lead the Hawks to a 5-3 win in the first game. Stony Brook finishes the day at 15-14 overall and 4-3 in the America East while Hartford improves to 12-14 and 6-1.

The Hawks grabbed a quick lead in game two as Mike Amendola homered with one out in the second to give Hartford a 1-0 lead. Bill Perry extended that lead in the third launching a three-run home run to make it 4-0.

Hartford made it 5-0 in the fourth on an infield RBI single from Simon Kudernatsch before the Seawolves finally got on the board in the fifth on an RBI single from junior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.), driving in freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario).

But the Hawks added another run in the sixth on a Brady Stouffer solo home run and the Seawolves were unable to mount a threat a threat against Moraski as the Hawks completed the doubleheader sweep. Moraksi allowed just one run in his 7.0 innings of work, walking two and striking out three. Sophomore Matt Harloff (Valley Stream, N.Y.) took the loss for the Seawolves, giving up five runs and six hits in 3.1 innings.

Stony Brook jumped on top early in game one as Tansey singled to lead off the second and then eventually came around to score on a wild pitch from Hartford starter Chris Greiner. Hartford tied in the third though as Grap singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a Bill Perry RBI double.

But the Seawolves came right back with two more runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Mike Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) doubled with one out and then scored on two-out RBI single from Tansey. Sophomore Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) made it 3-1 with a RBI double scoring Tansey.

Hartford tied the game in the fourth though as Amendola singled with one out and then came home on a two-run home run off the bat of Adam Bowser. The Hawks then grabbed the lead on the Grap single in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh on a Matt Walker RBI single.

Greiner picked up the victory for Hartford, scattering nine hits over his 7.0 innings of work. Senior Gary Novakowski (Prospect, Conn.) took the loss for Stony Brook, giving up four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. Tansey led the Seawolves offense, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at University Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
