Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

Baltimore, Md. - Sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with a grand slam to help Stony Brook beat UMBC, 10-7, in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at UMBC Softball Stadium. In game two, sophomore Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) allowed just one earned run in seven innings as the Seawolves completed the doubleheader sweep with a 3-2 victory. Stony Brook improves to 18-15-1 (5-5 America East) with the two wins.

The Seawolves jumped out to an early lead in game one, thanks to a two-run home run by junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.). UMBC answered back with a solo homer in the bottom of the second to narrow the lead to 2-1.

Stony Brook exploded offensively in the top of the third, scoring six run on five hits. Senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led things off with a first-pitch single to center field. After a pop-up and an error by UMBC's second baseman, junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) doubled to leftfield, driving in Westphal. Sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) then drew a walk to load the bases for Kavitsky, who took the first pitch she saw and drove it over the left centerfield wall. Two batters later, Jacobs hit a solo homerun to left to extend the Seawolves' lead to 8-1.

UMBC rallied in the bottom of the fourth with two home runs of its own to pull within two, but the Seawolves' offense wasn't done, scoring twice more in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Fleury. The two teams combined for 17 runs and 25 total hits. Sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) picked up her 12th win of the season, while Jacobs pitched three innings for her second save of the year.

Jacobs then started game two for Stony Brook and allowed just two singles in the first five innings. In the mean time, Stony Brook continued to hit for power as Fleury belted a two-run home run in the top of the first for an early 2-0 lead.

A single to rightfield in the third inning by junior Molly Kestranek (St Mary's, Ga.) knocked in Stony Brook's third run of the game, which was all Jacobs needed, as she picked up her fourth win this year.

Stony Brook will finish its three-game series with UMBC tomorrow at noon.
