Softball Loses Close Game to UMBC

April 13, 2008

Box Score

Baltimore, Md. - Sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) struck out 12 in six innings, but gave up a late home run in a 2-1 loss to UMBC Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Stony Brook to 18-16-1 (5-6 America East) on the season.

After recording 22 hits in yesterday's doubleheader, the Seawolves struggled to get things going offensively Sunday, managing just two hits against UMBC's Stephanie Weigman.

The Retrievers' Dana Shepherd led off the bottom of the first inning for UMBC with a single to third. A pair of walks by Struzenberg loaded the bases and a wild pitch resulted in the first run of the game, giving UMBC a 1-0 lead.

Stony Brook answered in the top of the second, when junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) started the inning off with a walk and was moved over to third on a pair of groundouts. Fleury would then score on an error by UMBC's second baseman, knotting the game at one apiece.

The teams combined for just two hits over the next four innings as both Struzenberg and Weigman continued to pitch strongly.

However, in the sixth inning, UMBC's Ashley Gray hit a leadoff home run which gave the Retrievers a 2-1 win.

Stony Brook plays a doubleheader against Iona on Thursday before returning to conference action this weekend against Binghamton.
