Hempstead, N.Y. -
Tom Legregni hit the go-ahead RBI single with one-out in the eighth inning to lead Hofstra to an 8-4 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at University Field. Stony Brook falls to 10-11 with the loss while Hofstra improves to 10-19.
Hofstra came to bat in the bottom of the eighth with the game tied at 4 but Matt Kougasian walked to lead off, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then took third on a single from Nick Panzarella. Legregni then came up and singled up the middle to give the Pride a 5-4 lead it would not relinquish. Anthony Sarno followed with a three-run home run to right field to put the game away.
Brody Fontaine picked up the victory for Hofstra, allowing an earned run in 4.0 innings of work. Freshman Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) took the loss for the Seawolves, giving up three runs and two hits in 2.1 innings.
The Pride took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first on a Mark Stuckless RBI double but the Seawolves grabbed the lead back with two runs in the fourth on an RBI single from sophomore Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from freshman Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.). Hofstra would get an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to tie it at 2 but the Seawolves went back on top in the fifth on a Nowak RBI double.
Hofstra took advantage of two Seawolves errors in the sixth to take the lead back as Sarno drove in two with a two-out single to right. Stony Brook once again recovered though as sophomore Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) drove in junior Michael Tansey (Valley Stram, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.
Freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) led the Seawolves offense with three hits and a run scored while Nowak had two hits and two RBI. Sarno paced the Pride offense, going 2-for-5 with five RBI.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday, hosting Binghamton at University Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
