Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) extended her scoreless-inning streak to 23 as she four-hit the University of Hartford Wednesday at University Field. Stony Brook used a two-run third inning to win the game, 2-0, improving to 24-16-1 (9-6 America East).
After allowing a first-inning single, Struzenberg retired nine of the next ten straight batters, four by strikeout.
In the bottom of the third inning, sophomore Crista Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.) and senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.) hit back-to-back, one-out singles to put runners on first and third. After a popup to the pitcher, junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) lined a single through the left side to plate both Cerrone and Westphal, giving the Seawolves a 2-0 advantage. Fanelli was 2-for-3 on the day.
After limiting Hartford to just six base runners over the first six innings, Struzenberg started off the seventh allowing a single to center. She struck out the next hitter, but walked the third, putting runners on first and second. The next hitter bounced a high grounder over Struzenberg's head which was fielded by shortstop Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) who stepped on second for the force, but was unable to turn the double play. Struzenberg walked the next batter to load the bases with two outs. Hartford's Ann Kyzer battled to a full count, but Struzenberg's rise ball was to much to handle as she struck out swinging, ending the game.
With the win, Struzenberg improves to 17-6 on the season.
The Seawolves will play a single game tomorrow against Fairfield starting at 2 p.m. Tomorrow's game will also be senior day, recognizing the careers of seniors Ashley Westphal and Sara Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.).
