Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Fairfield University used a three-run third inning to beat Stony Brook softball in a single game, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at University Field. It was an emotional day for the Seawolves as the Stony Brook athletic department recognized the team's two seniors, Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Sara Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.), in a brief ceremony before the game. The loss moves Stony Brook to 24-17-1 (9-6 America East) on the season.
After being retired in order by freshman Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) in the top of the first, Fairfield started off the second with a single through the left side, which was followed up by a two-run homer to right field by Kris D'Alessandro.
In the third, two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Stags, who used a sacrifice fly and back-to-back singles by Breanne Morschauser and Erin Frank to tack on three more runs, and extend their lead to 5-0.
The Seawolves rallied in the fourth when junior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) hit a one-out home run to right centerfield. The next batter, sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) then doubled to right-center. After a strikeout made it two outs in the inning, Fairfield's third basemen fielded a grounder by sophomore Kendall Blumenthal (Frederick, Md.) but misfired on the throw to first, allowing Kavitsky to score, to cut the lead to three.
Sophomore Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) shutdown the Stags offense, allowing just one hit in 4.1 innings of relief, but Fairfield's Danielle Iovino matched Jacobs over the final two innings, to put the game away, 5-2.
Stony Brook has a crucial series this weekend against in-state rival Albany, starting Saturday at noon.
