April 3, 2008

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI as the Stony Brook Seawolves topped Rutgers, 10-5, in game one of a doubleheader Thursday at University Field. Stony Brook dropped game two, 2-1, to split the series and move to 14-12-1 on the season.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early lead on the Seawolves in game one, thanks to a double to centerfield by Mallory Miller which drove in two runs. Miller scored later in that inning and Rutgers pushed a run across in the top of the second to open up a 4-0 lead.

The Seawolves rallied in the bottom-half of the second, with Kavitsky leading off with a double to right-center. A single by junior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) moved Kavitsky to third and a sacrifice fly to right by sophomore Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) put Stony Brook on the board for the first time. Oberto, who had stolen second and moved to third on the sac-fly, then scored on a squeeze-bunt by sophomore Crista Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.), which brought the Seawolves within two at, 4-2.

In the fifth inning, the Seawolves took advantage of two Rutgers errors with two outs to score four more times, to pull ahead, 6-4. Another three errors by the Scarlet Knights in the sixth inning opened the doors for the Seawolves to extend their lead, as they scored four more times.

Jacobs, who came in relief of starting pitcher freshman Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.), retired 11 straight batters at one point and pitched 5.2 innings for her third win of the season.

In game two, both teams were silent offensively, until Kavitsky hit her second home run of the season over the right-centerfield wall, giving Stony Brook a, 1-0 lead. However, Rutgers answered with two runs in the top of the seventh to pull ahead by the final score of, 2-1.

Sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) pitched well despite picking up the loss, allowing just four hits while striking out nine in seven innings.

Stony Brook will be hosting Boston University this weekend in America East action, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one starts at noon.
