April 6, 2008

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) hit a walk-off RBI single to right-centerfield in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Stony Brook a, 2-1, win over Boston University Sunday at University Field. The victory improves Stony Brook's record to 15-14-1 (2-4 America East).

Boston's April Setterlund started the game off with a single thru the left side, and later moved to third on two sacrifices by the Terriers. A wild pitch by sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) allowed Setterlund to score, giving Boston an early, 1-0 lead.

However, Struzenberg would settle down after that, allowing just three hits over the next seven innings.

Boston's Cassidi Hardy and Kelley Engman combined to allow just five hits to the Seawolves over the first six innings of the game, but sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) tied the game up with a solo-home run to left-centerfield with one out in the seventh.

The Terriers threatened in extra innings, loading the bases with two outs, but the next batter grounded back to Struzenberg ending the inning.

Senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.) started off the bottom of the eighth with a walk. A sacrifice bunt by junior Molly Kestranek (St Mary's, Ga.) moved her over to second and infield single by junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) put runners on the corners. With a full count and one out, Fleury delivered the game-winning RBI with a line drive to the right center.

Struzenberg pitched all eight innings for the Seawolves, striking out nine while picking up her 10th win of the season.

Stony Brook continues America East play on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Hartford starting at 2:00 p.m.
