April 9, 2008

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) recorded 18 strikeouts in 11 innings as the Stony Brook softball team split an afternoon doubleheader with Hartford, Wednesday. The Seawolves dropped game one, 1-0, but topped Hartford in game two, 4-2, to move to 16-15-1 (3-5 America East) on the season.

Struzenberg allowed just two hits over the first five innings of game one, but after getting the first batter of the sixth inning to popup to short, Hartford's Amanda Dilworth reached first on an infield single. A stolen base, a walk and a fly-out put runners on first and second with two outs when Olivia Piacentini singled to leftfield, driving in the only run of the game.

Hartford's Brittany Stratton gave up just two hits to the Seawolves in game one.

It took a little while for Stony Brook's bats to come alive in game two, but in the fourth inning with sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) standing on first and two outs, junior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) beat out an infield hit to put runners on first and second. Kavitsky then stole third and ended up scoring on an error by Hartford's catcher. With Oberto now on second, sophomore Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) doubled to leftfield to extend the Seawolves' lead to, 2-0.

After allowing a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth, Struzenberg struck out three straight batters to maintain the 2-1 advantage.

Stony Brook answered right back in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a leadoff single by senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.) A sacrifice bunt moved Westphal to second and a single to right-center by junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) put Seawolves on first and third for junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.). Fleury came through with a single back to the pitcher, which scored Westphal. Sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) then bunted Fanelli in from third to give Stony Brook a 4-1 lead.

Struzenberg gave up an unearned run in the sixth before being replaced by Jacobs, who allowed just one hit in the final two innings to earn the save. Struzenberg is now 11-6 on the season.

The softball team will be back on the road this weekend, when they travel to Baltimore, Md. to take on UMBC in America East action.
