Baseball Drops Series Opener To Albany, 6-5

Albany, N.Y. - Junior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and sophomore Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) each had three hits and two RBI but it wasn't enough as the Albany Great Danes used a four-run seventh to rally for a 6-5 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Seawolves fall to 30-22 overall and 13-8 in the America East with the loss while the Great Danes improve to 15-36 and 8-13.

Stony Brook took an early lead with two runs in the first on a run-scoring single from sophomore Mike Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) and a RBI groundout from Dyer. The Seawolves added to their lead with two more runs in the third on solo home runs from Witkowski and Dyer.Albany cut the SBU lead to 4-2 in the bottom of third on a two-run triple from Brendan Rowland.

The Seawolves maintained that lead until the seventh when Albany struck for four runs capped by a three-run home run from Rowland that put the Great Danes up 6-4.

The Seawolves rallied in the ninth though, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Witkowski followed with a RBI single to make it 6-5 but the Great Danes then turned to Dave Noble who retired freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) on a fly out to center to end the game.

Rowland led the Albany offense as he went 3-for-4 with five RBI and was the only Great Dane to record multiple hits. Josh Willlimott picked up the victory for Albany, allowing four runs in 7.0 innings. Senior Tom Koehler (New Rochelle, N.Y.) took the loss for the Seawolves despite striking out 10 in his 6.1 innings of work.

The teams will continue their four-game series on Friday with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
