Daniel Bierce hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Lafayette Leopards to a 7-6 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Kamine Stadium. The Leopards used a five-run third on their way to a 5-1 win in game one. The Seawolves finish the day with a record of 26-19 while Lafayette improves to 25-22.
Stony Brook took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning of game two on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) but Rob Froio led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and Bierce followed with a two-run home run to give the Leopards a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish.
Lafayette took the early lead on run-scoring hits from Froio and Tom Hayes in the third but the Seawolves responded with three runs in the fourth on a solo home run from junior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), a run-scoring double from Dyer and a RBI single from junior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.).
The Leopards regained the lead on a two-run home run from Hayes in the bottom of the fourth but SBU vaulted back ahead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from freshman Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and a RBI single from junior Justin Echevarria (Uniondale, N.Y.). Lafayette tied it in the bottom of the inning on a Ryan Roberts RBI single before the Dyer sacrifice fly gave the Seawolves the lead back in the seventh.
Brian Mostek picked up the win for the Lafayette, allowing an unearned run in 1.0 inning of work. Sophomore Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine) took the loss for Stony Brook, giving up two runs in 1.1 innings of work. Dyer led the SBU offense with three hits and two RBI.
Sophomore Mike Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) gave the Seawolves an early lead in the first game, driving in Witkowski who led off the game with a double to center. But the Leopards took control of the game with five runs in the third highlighted by back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Joe Ezekiel and Tom Ambrosole and an RBI single from Roberts.
The five runs were more than enough for Lafayette starter Kevin Reese who allowed just three hits after the opening inning to pick up the victory for the Leopards. Freshman Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) took the loss for Stony Brook, giving up five runs in his 2.2 innings of work. Junior Michael Barbot (Bronx, N.Y.) pitched well for the Seawolves, hurling 3.1 hitless innings.
