Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior goalkeeper Marisa Viola (Cutchogue, N.Y.) made four saves and the Stony Brook University women's soccer team outshot the Albany Great Danes, 16-14, but Albany used two first-half goals to defeat the Seawolves, 2-0, in America East action on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves honored their four seniors- Viola, Michelle Striefsky (Lansdale, Pa.), Alexandra Teti (Downington, Pa.) and Kelly Grant (Fairfax, Va.)- prior to the game.

Stony Brook (6-8-2, 5-1-1 America East) nearly took the lead in the opening minutes when freshman Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) crossed the ball from the left sideline to freshman Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.), who one-timed a shot from 10 yards out. But Albany goalkeeper Cate Crenson was able to make the save to keep the Seawolves off the scoreboard.

Albany (8-7-1, 3-2-1 America East) jumped on top in the 26th minute on a goal from Chrissy Klepper. Rebecca Lee set up the score as she sent a free kick from the right sideline to Klepper, who collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and then put it just over the outstretched arm of Viola and into the net.

The Great Danes pushed their lead to 2-0 with six minutes remaining in the first half as Lee sent a pass to Ashley Tirabassi, who dribbled to the left side of the 18-yard box and then drilled a shot into the lower right corner of the goal. Stony Brook went into the half still trailing 2-0 despite outshooting the Great Danes, 8-7.

SBU nearly cut the Great Danes lead in half just over 15 minutes into the second period but Kershaw's shot off a pass from sophomore Dominique Adamo (Ramsey, N.J.) went just over the net. Viola kept Albany from adding to its lead midway through the half as she made a diving save on a shot from Lee.

Sophomore Colleen McKenna (Manorville, N.Y.) almost put the Seawolves on the scoreboard with 10 minutes remaining but Crenson made a diving stop on her shot from the left side. SBU was unable to push across a goal over the final 10 minutes of the game as Albany held on for the victory.

Crenson made eight saves for Albany, who snapped the Seawolves four-game winning streak. Viola was named the America East Player of the Game for Stony Brook, while Crenson earned the honor for the Great Danes.

The Seawolves conclude the 2009 regular season on Thursday, traveling to take on Maine. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
