Orlando, Fla. -
Playing in its final game of the University of Central Florida Tournament on Sunday, Stony Brook University's softball team lost to Eastern Michigan, 6-1. Junior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) continued her hot start to the 2009 season, going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Stony Brook is now 4-1 on the year while Eastern Michigan is 5-8.
For the first time this season the Seawolves failed to score in their first at-bats, unable to capitalize on a leadoff double by Kavitsky. The Eagles wasted no time in their half of the first, as Jenny Scherer took sophomore Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) over the leftfield wall for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Eastern Michigan struck again. After a leadoff single and two free passes loaded the bases, an error by Kavitsky scored the Eagles' second unearned run of the game. McKenna Russ followed that with a single back up the middle to plate two more and put the Seawolves in a 5-0 hole.
Stony Brook's lone run of the game came in the fourth after a pair of walks put runners on first and second. A fielding error by Eastern Michigan's shortstop allowed senior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) to score from second and breakup the shutout.
After averaging nine hits over its first four games, Stony Brook managed just four against starter Michelle Hletko. Matthes was given the loss and moves to 1-1 on the season.
In five games over the weekend, Kavitsky hit .643 (9-14) with a double, three triples, a home run, three RBI and five runs scored.
Stony Brook returns to the Sunshine State next weekend to compete in the Florida Atlantic University "Miken" Classic in Boca Raton, Fla.
