South Orange, N.J. -
Stony Brook University's baseball team pounded out 12 hits but it wasn't enough as Seton Hall used a five-run eighth on its way to a 10-4 victory over the Seawolves on Tuesday afternoon at Carroll Field. Stony Brook falls to 2-7 with the loss while Seton Hall improves to 8-5.
Seton Hall jumped on top with a run in the bottom of the first on a Matt Smedberg run-scoring single. But the Seawolves responded with two runs in the second as junior Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) drove in senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.) with a RBI single and then came around to score on a double play grounder from senior Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y.).
The Pirates tied it in the second as Ed Brown scored on a wild pitch from Stony Brook freshman starter Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.). Seton Hall then added two more runs in the third, on a Chris Affinito RBI double and a Chris Spanuolo sacrifice fly, to take a 4-2 lead.
Stony Brook drew within a run in the fifth on a run-scoring double from sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) but the Pirates answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single from Spagnuolo. SBU still trailed by a score of 5-3 entering the bottom of the eighth but the Pirates then exploded for the five runs to put the game away. Charlie Rivera, William Walsh and Bobby Abreu each had run-scoring hits in the inning.
George Fernandez (1-0) picked up the victory for Seton Hall as he hurled 3.0 scoreless innings of relief. Johnson (1-1) took the loss for the Seawolves as he allowed four runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work. Tansey, senior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) and sophomore Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) led the Stony Brook offense with two hits apiece.
Stony Brook opens up its 2009 home schedule on Saturday, hosting Le Moyne for a doubleheader. First pitch at University Field is set for 12 p.m.
