Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI but it wasn't enough as Hofstra scored four unearned runs over the first three innings on its way to 4-3 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at University Field. Stony Brook falls to 9-10 with the loss while Hofstra improves to 5-15.
Hofstra grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Mark Stuckless walked to lead off and then moved to second when Tom Legregni was hit by the pitch. Stuckless then came home one out later on a Seawolves error. The Pride pushed their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a run-scoring single from Legregni and an RBI groundout from Adam Perlo.
The Seawolves climbed back into the game in the bottom of the third on a two-out two-run double from Thode. Stony Brook then added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from senior Chad Rebecca (Mount Prospect, Ill.).
Stony Brook threatened to tie the game in the eighth as Thode singled to lead off the inning. Freshman Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.), in as a pinch runner for Thode, then moved to second on a wild pitch with junior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) at the plate.
But Hofstra reliever Jeff Guthridge followed by retiring Stephan and senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.) before intentionally walking junior Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.). Guthridge then retired freshman Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) to get out of the jam.
Guthridge pitched a perfect ninth to secure the win for the Pride. Sophomore Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) took the loss for the Seawolves, allowing four unearned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Four Stony Brook relievers- senior Marc Brown (Lancaster, Pa.), junior Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine), senior Jon Kalkau (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Nowak- combined to pitch 6.2 innings of scoreless relief for Stony Brook.
Rob Kumbatovic allowed one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief to pick up the victory for the Pride.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday as they begin America East play with a four-game series against Vermont at University Field. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
