Softball Falls to Fairfield, 8-3

April 14, 2009

Box Score

Fairfield, Conn. - Junior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, but it was not enough as Stony Brook University's softball team fell to Fairfield, 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams managed ten hits in the game, but the Seawolves could not overcome the ten walks they issued to the Stags. Stony Brook now stands at 26-8 (9-2 America East) while Fairfield improves to 15-18 (5-1 MAAC).

SBU grabbed its only lead of the game in the top of the first inning, which Kavitsky led off with a walk. After stealing second, she scored when senior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) knocked one through the left side. The single was Fanelli's 200th career hit, making her one of only three Seawolves in school history to eclipse the 200 hit mark.

Fairfield would not trail for long, however, taking advantage of five free passes issued by sophomore starter Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) in the bottom half of the inning to score twice. The Stags would tack on two more runs in the second inning to extend their advantage to 4-1.

Following a one-out single to center by Kavitsky in the top of the third, junior Crista Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.) slapped a double to left centerfield. Kavitsky would come all the way around from first to score, cutting the deficit to two runs.

Fairfield refused to slow down, though, scoring at least one run in each of the next three innings.

Trailing 7-2 in the top of the fifth, Kavitsky scored her final run of the game on a two-out single to right center by senior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.). Sophomore Sarah Minice pitched around Stony Brook's ten hits to pick up the win, her 12th of the season.

Stony Brook will host a doubleheader against Sacred Heart on Thursday before playing Boston University this weekend.
