Vestal, N.Y. -
Junior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) hit two home runs and drove in a career-high six runs but it wasn't enough as the Binghamton Bearcats scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for an 8-7 win over the Stony Brook University baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field in the first game of an America East doubleheader. Corey Taylor hit a walk-off RBI single with one out in the ninth to lead the Bearcats to a 4-3 victory in the second game. Stony Brook is now 16-15 overall and 6-4 in the America East.
Senior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) gave the Seawolves the early lead in the second game, drilling a solo home run to right field with two outs in the third. Binghamton would tie it in the sixth on a Taylor sacrifice fly.
The Seawolves responded with two runs in the seventh as senior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) led off with a single and then moved to third on a single to left from senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.). Mazzurco then scored a batter later on an RBI groundout from Dyer. Tansey came home with the second run of the inning on a bunt from senior Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y.).
Binghamton rallied to tie it in the eighth though on run-scoring singles from Taylor and Jeff Skelhorne-Gross. The Bearcats then loaded the bases with one out in the ninth for Taylor, who singled to left field to drive in C.J. Lukaszewski with the winning run.
Senior right hander Mike Errigo (Bayside, N.Y.) pitched terrific for the Seawolves in the second game as he allowed just three runs on four hits in 7.1 innings of work. Witkowski had two hits and an RBI to lead the Stony Brook offense.
Binghamton jumped to an early lead in the first game as Henry Dunn led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left. But Dyer slammed a three-run home run to right-center field in the second to put the Seawolves on top 3-1. The Bearcats then tied the game in the third on a two-run single from Dave Ciocchi.
The Seawolves responded with four runs in the fourth though, highlighted by another three-run home run from Dyer. SBU still led 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh but the Bearcats loaded the bases with nobody out for Taylor, who hit a two-run single to cut the Stony Brook lead to 7-5.
Joe Charron then reached on a bunt single to load the bases again and Ciocchi followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring Binghamton within a run. Taylor then came home with the tying run a batter later on a Ken Jacobi single.
The Seawolves then walked Skelhorne-Gross to load the bases for Jeff Abrams, who hit a walk-off RBI single to right to give the Bearcats the victory. Walker McKinven pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the victory for Binghamton.
Freshman Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) started for the Seawolves and allowed three runs and five hits in 6.0 innings of work. Sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Tansey recorded two hits apiece for Stony Brook.
The teams will wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
