Senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and seven Seawolves pitchers combined on a six-hitter to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to a 5-1 victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in non-conference action this afternoon at FDU Field. Stony Brook improves to 18-16 with the victory while FDU falls to 9-23.
Senior Jonathan Kalkau (Bellmore, N.Y.) and sophomore Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) each hurled 2.0 scoreless innings for the Seawolves, while juniors Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine), Matt Harloff (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Chris Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) all tossed a scoreless inning on the mound for SBU as well. Seniors Chad Rebecca (Mount Prospect, Ill.) and Keith Fier (Armonk, N.Y.) recorded two hits apiece for the Seawolves, who tallied 11 hits on the day.
Stony Brook grabbed the early lead, scoring two runs in the third. Sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) led off the inning with a home run to right and Rebecca then singled with one out. Rebecca would advance to third on an FDU error before coming home on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario).
The Seawolves added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Tansey and a run-scoring single from Fier. SBU made it 5-0 in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Thode.
FDU got on the board in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. Steven LaForge followed with a run-scoring single but Stony Brook freshman reliever Joe Melioris (Rome, N.Y.) then struck out Brian Dillon to get out of the jam.
Ben Durgan took the loss for the Knights, allowing four runs and six hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, hosting Albany for the beginning of a four-game series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
