Hempstead, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University softball dropped a midweek non-conference game to Hofstra on Thursday afternoon, 8-0. Senior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) and junior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) both picked up hits for the Seawolves. Erin Wade and Kayleigh Lotti combined on the shutout for the Pride. With the loss, Stony Brook drops to 30-10 (11-3 America East) while Hofstra improves to 23-16 (11-3 CAA).
Stony Brook found itself in an early 2-0 hole as the Pride pushed two runs across in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Melissa Hodge hit a sac fly to left field, scoring the runner from third. Two batters later, an infield single increased Hofstra's lead to 2-0.
The Pride used three extra base hits to tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and chase Stony Brook's starting pitcher, junior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.), from the game. She was replaced by junior Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) who allowed only one hit in her first 1.1 innings before the Pride rallied for three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.
SBU's best chance to score came in the top of the third inning, as it took advantage of a hit-by-pitch and an error to put runners on the corners with two out. However, Wade got senior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.) to pop out in foul territory to end the inning.
The Seawolves return to America East conference action this weekend when they host UMBC.
