Sophomore Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and four runs scored as the Stony Brook University baseball team pounded out 20 hits on its way to a 16-3 victory over the Albany Great Danes in the second game of an America East doubleheader this afternoon at University Field. Ryan Gugel went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Great Danes to a 5-4 win in the first game. Stony Brook is now 19-17 overall and 8-6 in the America East.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early lead in the second game, scoring three runs in the first on an RBI single from senior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) and a two-run double from senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.). SBU added two runs in the second on run-scoring singles from Marshall and junior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.).
Albany cut the Stony Brook lead to 5-2 in the fourth on a two-run home run from Pete Eichner but the Seawolves answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.).
Stony Brook blew the game open in the fifth, striking for six runs to take a 12-2 lead. Marshall and senior Chad Rebecca (Mount Prospect, Ill.) had run-scoring hits in the inning for the Seawolves, who scored three of the six runs on Albany wild pitches.
Senior right hander Mike Errigo (Bayside, N.Y.) picked up the victory in game two for Stony Brook, allowing just two runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work. Errigo also struck out a career-high 11 and walked just one. Thode went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Seawolves, who also got two hits apiece from Tansey, freshman Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) and junior Jeremy Nowak (Cheektowaga, N.Y.).
Albany grabbed the early lead in the first game, scoring a run in the third on a Brendan Rowland RBI single. SBU tied the game in the fourth on a two-out run-scoring single from Mazzurco. But Albany answered with four runs in the fifth, to take a 5-1 lead. Gugel had the big hit of the inning, a two-run double to left.
Stony Brook would not go away though, scoring three runs in the sixth on a Thode solo home run and a two-out two-run single from Cantwell. Albany reliever Sean Gregory came into the game following the Cantwell single and got junior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) to fly out to left to end the threat. Gregory then pitched a perfect seventh to secure the victory for the Great Danes.
Freshman Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) took the loss for the Seawolves in game one as he allowed five runs, three earned, in 4.2 innings of work. Mazzurco and Cantwell each recorded two hits for Stony Brook.
The teams will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday at University Field. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 12:30 p.m.
