Jacobs Deals Shutout In Win Over UMBC

April 26, 2009

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) allowed only four hits in a complete-game shutout of UMBC's softball team on Sunday afternoon at University Field. The game's lone RBI came off the bat of junior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) as the Seawolves outlasted the Retrievers, 1-0. Stony Brook now stands at 32-11 (13-4 America East) on the season while UMBC falls to 32-19 (10-8).

Jacobs, who recorded just one strikeout on the day, never allowed a runner past second base. Needing only 66 total pitches, she recorded 13 of the 21 outs with groundballs. Jacobs induced two key double plays, one of which ended the game as senior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) stepped on third and fired to first.

Offensively, the Seawolves managed only five base runners all day, managing just two hits off UMBC starter Stephanie Weigman. SBU scored its run in the third inning, which junior Kendall Blumenthal (Frederick, Md.) led off with a walk. Blumenthal advanced to third on back-to-back sacrifice bunts by junior Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) and sophomore Brijette Martin (New York, N.Y.). Kavitsky then took Weigman's 2-2 offering and lined it through the right side to plate Blumenthal.

Elsewhere in the America East, Boston University completed the sweep of Vermont to remain in second place, a game behind the Seawolves. Albany defeated Maine to hold onto third place with an 11-5 record.

Stony Brook's next game will be on Tuesday when they host Marist at 3:00 p.m. Before the game, Stony Brook will recognize the hard work and dedication this year's senior class has given to Seawolves softball during their four years.
