Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Sophomore Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and seven Seawolves pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout to make it stand up as the Stony Brook University baseball team defeated the Marist Red Foxes, 2-0, in non-conference action this afternoon at University Field. Stony Brook improves to 24-18 with the victory while Marist falls to 24-23.
Stony Brook scored the only runs of the game in the fifth as senior Chad Rebecca (Mount Prospect, Ill.) doubled with two outs, the Seawolves first hit of the game. Marino then followed with the first home run of his career, a line drive just over the left field fence.
The Seawolves pitching staff was dominant, allowing just six Marist batters to reach base. The Red Foxes lone rally came in the seventh as Ricky Pacione walked with one out and then advanced to second on a Bryce Nugent groundout. But freshman Joe Melioris (Rome, N.Y.) retired Ben Luderer on a grounder to second to end the threat.
Junior Jordan Purington (Westbrook, Maine) picked up his first victory of the season for the Seawolves, allowing just one hit in his inning of work. Senior Jonathan Kalkau (Bellmore, N.Y.) earned the save as he pitched the ninth. Junior Chris Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and senior Marc Brown (Lancaster, Pa.) each hurled 2.0 innings for SBU.
Eric Alessio took the loss for the Red Foxes, giving up two runs and three hits in 2.0 innings. Sophomore Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) and senior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) each recorded a hit for the Seawolves, who have won six of seven.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, traveling to take on Hartford for the beginning of a four-game series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
