He hit .303 in 54 games for the Thunder Bay Border Cats this summer and earned a trip to the 2010 Northwoods League All-Star game. Nivins made just one error in the outfield for the Border Cats, compiling a fielding percentage of .991.

Nivins ranked second on the team with 68 hits and led the squad with seven home runs and 36 RBI. He was also selected to participate in the league's home run derby. A 2010 America East All-Rookie selection in his first season with the Seawolves, Nivins started 50 games in centerfield. He hit .292 and ranked second on the team in home runs (nine) and RBI (48).

The Seawolves won their second America East championship in three seasons in 2010. SBU advanced to the Myrtle Beach Regional, where they defeated North Carolina State, 6-2, to earn the program's first ever Division I NCAA tournament victory.
