Box Score
Charlotte, N.C. -
Stony Brook University's softball team fell to Charlotte, 1-0, in the championship game of the First Pitch Classic on Sunday afternoon. Senior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) allowed just four hits in six innings of work, but an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the difference. Stony Brook finished its first weekend of play with a 3-2 record.
Charlotte's Emily Jeffery threw a complete game for the 49ers, allowing four hits while striking out seven and picking up her second win against the Seawolves this weekend. SBU had runners reach second base in three separate innings, but never managed to push a run across.
The lone score of the game came in the fifth inning when Keri Palma singled through the right side and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Struzenberg would strikeout the next batter, but with two outs Lorena Vela took a 2-1 pitch to right center for the deciding RBI single.
Stony Brook's has the upcoming weekend off before playing Georgetown on March 5 in the NC State Wolfpack Challenge. The Seawolves will also face Longwood, Coastal Carolina and host, North Carolina State.
