WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Seawolves nearly overcame an early deficit to complete the series sweep of Monmouth, but in the end came up just short in a 7-5 loss on Sunday.
How It Happened
- With two outs and two strikes in the top of the first, Rachael Brown gave the Seawolves an early lead with her seventh home run of the season. The lead would be short lived, however, as the Hawks cashed in on a two-out double in the bottom of the inning.
- After a scoreless second, Monmouth pulled ahead in the bottom of the third as four extra-base hits turned into five runs for the Hawks. Later, a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fifth would extend the Monmouth lead to 7-1.
- The Seawolves rallied late in the top of the seventh and nearly tied up the game. Karri Pritchard and Emily Valentine led off the inning with a single and a double, before a pinch-hit grounder from Josie Alfano brought in the first run. Then, with two outs, Ella Hayes singled in another run, followed by a two-run double from Brown to cut the deficit down to 7-5. Ultimately, though, this would be as close as Stony Brook would get as the Hawks just managed to hold on for the win.
