STONY BROOK, N.Y. - After trailing for much of the afternoon, the Seawolves tied it in extras against Fordham and ultimately opened the homestand with a 3-2 win thanks to Emily Valentine's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.
How It Happened
- The Rams took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after the first two batters each reached safely and swiped a bag. Crimson Rice managed to limit the damage to just the one run and strand two after getting the final two batters to ground out and line out.
- Rice would hold Fordham scoreless over the next three innings, getting out of another jam in the fourth a pair of punchouts to strand two more.
- Stony Brook would break up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth, as Ella Hayes doubled into the gap in left to bring home Pritchard and make it 1-1.
- Melissa Reed, who came in to relieve Rice in the fifth, successfully kept the Rams off the board for a total of four innings as the game reached extras.
- In the top of the ninth, Fordham went back on top 2-1 after a double to right brought in the go-ahead run.
- Things got off to a rocky start in the bottom of the ninth as the first two Seawolves flied out. Down to the final out, Marissa Thalassinos kept Stony Brook alive with a double to right center. Hayes would come through in the clutch again and singled through the right side to bring home Thalassinos to tie the game. A wild pitch would move Hayes into scoring position, setting the stage for Valentine, who worked a 2-2 count and fouled off three in a row before sending one past the diving first baseman and into right field. Hayes would score all the way from second after just beating out the throw to the plate.
