Softball Splits at Under Armour Showcase

March 13, 2010

Box Score

Clearwater, Fla. - Stony Brook University's softball team split a pair of games during the Under Armour Showcase on Saturday afternoon. Behind 11 strikeouts from senior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.), the Seawolves defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 6-3, before falling to Ball State, 8-0. Stony Brook is now 4-7 on the season.

Trailing by one to Florida Gulf Coast in the bottom of the second, senior Kendall Blumenthal (Frederick, Md.) opened the inning off with a walk. A pair of sacrifices moved her over to third and senior Katelyn O'Donnell (Kingston, Mass.) drove her in with a single down the right field line. The Seawolves quickly took the lead as O'Donnell stole second and then scored on a single to center by senior Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.).

Despite never having more than two hits in an inning, the Seawolves continued to manufacture runs as they scored at least once in three of the next four innings. Clare, who drove in a pair of runs, and senior Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) both finished the game with a pair of hits.

In the Seawolves' second game of the day, senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) went 3-for-3 with a double, but SBU never managed to get a runner past second as Ball State's Elizabeth Milian recorded nine strikeouts in six innings. Stony Brook trailed by just one in the fourth inning, but a pair of home runs pushed the deficit to four. Ball State would tack on four more in the top of the sixth on a pair of extra-base hits.

Struzenberg, Stony Brook's all-time leader in strikeouts, recorded two more strikeouts against Ball State to finish with 13 on the day.

Stony Brook will face Kennesaw State tomorrow at 11:15 in its final game of the Showcase.
