March 16, 2010

Box Score

South Orange, N.J. - Freshman Tanner Nivins' (Kitchener, Ontario) sacrifice fly in the 10th inning gave the Stony Brook University baseball team a 4-2 lead but Seton Hall rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning and then pushed across the game-winning run in the 11th to defeat the Seawolves, 5-4, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.

Senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) led Stony Brook (2-7) with two hits in three at-bats. Freshman James Campbell (Bridgeport, Conn.) started and hurled 4.0 shutout innings for SBU. Mike Genovese pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief for Seton Hall (5-7) to pick up the victory.

Stony Brook took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth as freshman John Adornetto (Commack, N.Y.) scored from second base on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.). The Pirates tied it in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring double off the bat off A.J. Rusbarsky.

The game headed to the 10th still tied at 2 but freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) and sophomore Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.) each singled to start the inning. Senior Chris Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) then sacrificed the runners to second and third before Genovese intentionally walked freshman Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.).

Genovese then hit junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) to force in a run and give SBU a 3-2 lead. Nivins then followed with the sacrifice fly to center to give SBU the two-run advantage. But a two-run double in the bottom of the inning by Frank Esposito tied the game at four.

SBU went in order in the top of 11th and the Pirates then put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the inning. Maier, who came in in relief of Carmona at the beginning of the inning, then intentionally walked Will Walsh to load the bases. Rusbarsky followed with sacrifice fly to right which scored Chris Spagnuolo with the winning run.

The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, hosting Iona at University Field in their home opener. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
