Baseball Routs Iona, 22-11, In Home Opener

March 17, 2010

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) hit two home runs and had six RBI and the Stony Brook University baseball team used a 10-run second and seven-run third on its way to a 22-11 win over Iona in its home opener at University Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves pounded out 24 hits including nine home runs.

Senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) and junior Chad Marshall (Paris Ontario) added two home runs each for the Seawolves, who had 15 extra-base hits. Marshall had five hits and drove in four runs.

It looked as if the Gaels were well on their way to a victory over the first inning and a half. Iona scored two runs in the first on a Michael Chiaravallto two-run double and then scored five more in the second highlighted by a Dean Dignelli grand slam.

But SBU had an answer, exploding for 10 runs in the bottom half of the second. Dyer led off the inning with a home run and Marshall then hit a two-run homer three batters later to make it 7-3. Freshmen Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) and Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) then each drove in a run before Dyer hit his second homer of the inning, a three-run shot that gave SBU an 8-7 lead.

Stephan capped the inning with a two-run home run. Iona got a run back in the third but the Seawolves answered with seven runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game away. The seven-run inning was highlighted by a Dyer two-run triple and another two-run home run from Marshall.

Freshman G.C. Yerry (West Shokan, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Seawolves, hurling 2.1 innings of relief. John Kassebaum took the loss for the Gaels as he allowed five runs in a third of an inning.

Stony Brook returns to action on Friday as it opens the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament against the host Pirates. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
