Baseball Defeats Iona, 3-2, Behind Tropeano

March 20, 2010

Box Score

South Orange, N.J. - Freshman Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch with one out in the eighth inning and sophomore Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) hurled a six-hitter to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to a 3-2 win over the Iona Gaels in the second game of the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Saturday morning at Owen T. Carroll Field.

Tropeano was brilliant for the Seawolves as he stuck out a career-best 13 and did not walk a batter. Junior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had three hits in five at-bats to lead the Stony Brook offense.

With the game tied at 2, Jankowski led off the bottom of the eighth with a bunt single. He then stole second and advanced to third on a fly to center by freshman Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario). Then with junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) at the plate, Jankowski scampered home on a Matt Petro wild pitch.

Tropeano followed by retiring the side in order, including two strike outs, in the ninth to secure the win for the Seawolves. Petro took the loss for the Gaels as he allowed a run on three hits in his inning of work.

Iona jumped to the early lead as Nick Rossetti tripled to lead off the game and then came home on a single from Andrew Passerelle. But SBU evened the score at one in the bottom of the first as freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.

Stony Brook took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a run-scoring single from Marshall. The Gaels tied it at two in the seventh as Chris Griffin led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a Tropeano wild pitch.

The Seawolves play their final game of the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament on Sunday, taking on the host Pirates. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
