March 26, 2010

Box Score

Malibu, Calif. - Stony Brook University's baseball team pounded out 13 hits and used a four-run first on its way to a 7-4 win over the Pepperdine Waves on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Senior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with two RBI while sophomore Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) allowed just five hits in 8.1 innings. It is the fourth straight win for the Seawolves, who improve to 7-8 with the victory.

In the first game of a six-game seven-day road trip, the Seawolves jumped on the Waves early. The Seawolves loaded the bases with no out in the first and Dyer then drilled a two-run single down the left-field line to give SBU a 2-0 lead.

Junior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) followed with a single to load the bases again and freshman Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) then singled through the left side to score Stephan. Freshman Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) drove in the final run of the inning on a fielder's choice.

Pepperdine put a runner on third with one out in the bottom of the first but Johnson then struck out Floyd Given before getting Torrey Jacoby to ground out to third to end the threat. Stony Brook pushed its lead to 5-0 in the fifth as Dyer doubled with two outs and then came home on a run-scoring single from Marino.

Johnson, meanwhile, cruised through the middle innings as Pepperdine was unable to get a runner as far as second until the sixth. Stony Brook put the game away in the ninth as sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) walked to force in a run before freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch for the final Stony Brook run of the game.

Pepperdine scored all of its four runs in the ninth on a Nate Johnson grand slam. Carmona came into relieve Johnson following the grand slam and retired the next two hitters to secure the game for the Seawolves.

Johnson (2-2) stuck out five and walked three in his 8.1 innings of work. Cole Cook took the loss for Pepperdine, allowing aa of the Seawolves seven runs in his 8.2 innings.

The teams resume their three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. EST.
