Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score
Baltimore, Md. -
Senior Casey Jacobs (Davie, Fla.) went 3-for-3 with five RBI in the second game of a doubleheader against UMBC as Stony Brook University's softball team swept the Retrievers on Saturday afternoon. Stony Brook won game one, 6-1, before defeating UMBC, 7-2, in the night cap. SBU is now 12-2 (2-0 America East) on the season while UMBC is 15-9 (0-2).
In game one, a five-run fourth inning proved to be the difference for the Seawolves, who scored a total of six runs on just four hits. After a solo homer by senior Katelyn O'Donnell (Kingston, Mass.) in the top of the third gave SBU a 1-0 lead, the Seawolves took advantage of four consecutive walks to extend its advantage to six. Senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) had the teams only hit during the inning, a one-out RBI single up the middle.
Senior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) earned the win for Stony Brook, striking out eight in seven innings. The lone run scored against Struzenberg was on a solo home run in the fourth. The homer snapped a streak of 35.2 innings by Struzenberg without allowing an earned run.
Stony Brook's first runs of game two also came on a home run, a three-run blast by Jacobs to left centerfield. Two innings later, sophomore Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) and Jacobs would hit back-to-back doubles to score the Seawolves' fourth run of the game.
The duo would strike again in the fourth as Tenuto drove in a pair of runs with a single through the left side and Jacobs knocked in another with a single to left.
In the meantime, junior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) was shutting down the Retrievers' offense as she allowed just two baserunners over the first three innings. A solo homer in the fourth would be the lone run UMBC would score on Matthes, who went five innings for the win. Jacobs would finish the game off, pitching two innings in relief.
Stony Brook will wrap-up its first America East Conference series of the season with a single game on Sunday.
