Box Score

Bakersfield, Calif. - Stony Brook University's baseball team closed its six-game, seven-day trip to California with a 14-2 loss to the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Wednesday afternoon at Hardt Field. Sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with two hits each. Stony Brook falls to 8-12 with the loss.

The Seawolves jumped to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the first. Cantwell led off the game with a single and junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) was then hit by the pitch. Each of the runners moved up on a failed pickoff throw and Cantwell then scored on an RBI groundout from junior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.).

Senior Robert Dyer (Selden. N.Y.) then struck out but Carmona followed with a run-scoring single to drive in Marshall. But the Roadrunners answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a two-run single from Ryan McIntyre.

Cal State Bakersfield tacked on two runs in the third on a Garrett Brankse two-run home run and then added a run in the fifth on a Branske RBI single. The Roadrunners scored two runs in the sixth to make it 8-1 and Martin Medina then hit a two-run single in the seventh to put the game away.

Jonathan Montoya picked up the win for the Roadrunners, allowing two unearned runs in his 6.0 innings of work. Medina went 4-for-6 with four RBI to lead the Cal State Bakersfield offense.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, traveling to take on Le Moyne for the beginning of a four-game series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is 12 p.m.
