Softball Falls to Georgetown, 3-2

March 5, 2010

Box Score

Raleigh, N.C. - Senior Katelyn O'Donnell (Kingston, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, but a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth by Georgetown proved to be the difference as Stony Brook University's softball team fell to the Hoyas, 3-2, in its first game of the Wolfpack Challenge on Friday. With the loss, Stony Brook drops to 3-3 on the season while Georgetown moves to 5-5.

Stony Brooks struggled to get things going offensively, as its first hit came in the third inning, a single to left by senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) which put runners on the corners with just one out. However, Georgetown's Mackensey Carter retired the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.

After allowing a pair of singles in the bottom of the first, senior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) retired eight-straight batters. A single by the Hoyas to lead off the fourth, followed by a pair of walks loaded the bases with no out, however. A wild pitch would allow the runner from third to score, but Struzenberg would then buckle down, recording the final two outs of the inning with three runners on base.

It didn't take the Seawolves long to respond as O'Donnell led off the fifth with a single to third. A sacrifice bunt would move her all the way to third and a sacrifice fly to left by senior Crista Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.) would knot the score at 1-1.

Georgetown would retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Kristi Preuss hit a two-run home run to center field. O'Donnell would pull SBU within one with a one-out homer to left in the bottom of the seventh, but Carter would retire the next two batters as she held on for the win.

Stony Brook will face Longwood at 2:30 pm tomorrow followed by a matchup with host, North Carolina State, at 6:30 pm.
