Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) allowed just three runs in 7.0 innings and freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to an 8-3 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats in the second game of an America East Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. James Giulietti tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Binghamton to a 2-0 victory in the first game. Stony Brook is now 11-15 overall and 1-1 in the America East while the Bearcats are 8-15 and 1-1.
Johnson (3-2) allowed just five hits in his 7.0 innings of work. The right hander walked three and struck out five. Junior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and freshman Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) led the Seawolves offense in the second game with two hits each.
The teams entered the seventh inning of game two tied at three but senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) led off with a single and Carmona then homered to right to give the Seawolves a 5-3 lead. It was the third home run of the season for Carmona.
Stony Brook tacked on three runs in the eighth highlighted by a bases loaded walk to Stephan. Freshman Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) also drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Senior Michael Barbot (Clermont, Fla.) then pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to close out the game for the Seawolves.
Binghamton jumped on top in the first inning of game two on a Dave Ciocchi sacrifice fly. The Bearcats then added two runs in the second on a C.J. Lukaszewski two-run double. But SBU rallied to tie the game in the third as Nivins hit a solo home run and junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) hit a two-run shot.
Binghamton grabbed an early lead in game one, scoring a run in the first on a home run from Henry Dunn. The Seawolves threatened in the fourth as Marino doubled with two outs. But Giulietti then retired the next two batters to keep Stony Brook off the scoreboard.
The Bearcats added a run in the bottom of the fourth as Ciocchi singled with one out and eventually came home on a Peter Bregartner sacrifice fly. Giulietti then set the Seawolves down in order in each of the final three innings to give Binghamton the victory.
Sophomore Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) took the loss for the Seawolves, allowing the two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. Giulietti did not walk a batter in his 7.0 innings. Marino went 2-for-3 for Stony Brook.
The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
