Stony Brook University's baseball team fell to the Binghamton Bearcats, 12-3, in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday at Varsity Field. The Bearcats used an eight-run second to take control of the game. Stony Brook falls to 11-16 overall and 1-2 in the America East while Binghamton improves to 9-15 and 2-1.
Binghamton jumped to the early lead, scoring a run in the first. Henry Dunn doubled with one out and eventually came home on a wild pitch from Stony Brook freshman southpaw Adam Brown (Melville, N.Y.).
The Bearcats then broke the game open in the second, striking for eight runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run triple from Dunn and a bases-loaded triple from Joe Charron.
An RBI groundout from Dave Ciocchi in the third pushed the Binghamton lead to 10-0 and the Bearcats then tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI double from Jim Calderone. The Seawolves got on the board in the eighth on an RBI groundout from freshman Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario).
SBU scored two runs in the ninth on a two-run single from senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.), who led the Seawolves with two hits in three at-bats. Ciocchi and Calderon paced Binghamton with three hits each.
Mike Augliera earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in 8.0 innings. Brown took the loss for the Seawolves, who got 2.0 scoreless innings of relief from senior Chris Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, April 17, hosting the UMBC Retrievers for the beginning of a three-game series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
