Box Score
Hempstead, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's baseball team fell to Hofstra, 12-10, in non-conference action on Wednesday at the Pride's University Field. Freshman Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) led the Seawolves with three hits and four runs scored. Junior Stephen Marino (Centereach, N.Y.) and freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) each had two hits. SBU is 14-17 while Hofstra is 12-20.
Down 12-10 in their last at-bat, the Seawolves mounted a threat. With one out, Carmona was hit by a pitch and moved to second after freshman Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) drew a walk. But Tissenbaum flew out to right, and senior Justin Echevarria (Uniondale, N.Y.) struck out to end the game.
Freshman Patrick O'Leary (Sparta, N.J.) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs in an inning and a third. Greg Lettini earned the win for Hofstra.
Freshman Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) and sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) each had run-scoring singles in the second to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead. Hofstra moved ahead 3-2 after three innings, but SBU answered with four in their half of the fourth inning.
With the bases loaded and one out, Cantwell walked to force home Nivins. Junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) grounded out to second, scoring Tissenbaum. Marino capped the inning with a clutch single up the middle, plating Cantwell and Jankowski.
Stony Brook led 6-4 after four innings, but Hofstra scored three runs in their half of the fifth. After SBU tied the game at seven, the Pride answered with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Scott A'Hara, who finished with two hits and three runs, doubled in John Kenny and Ethan Paquette. A'Hara eventually would come around to score after moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on Elliot Hagburg's single. Paquette doubled home Mike Walraven, who singled with one out in the inning.
Senior Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) led off the seventh inning, reaching safely after getting hit by Cody Normand. After Dyer stole second, he advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Carmona singled home Dyer and advanced to third on Nivins' double to left. Tissenbaum grounded into a fielder's choice, erasing Carmona at home, but advanced to second as Carmona was tagged out in a rundown between third and home. Echevarria, who was summoned to pinch hit for Jankowski, followed with a single to center field, driving in Tissenbaum and Nivins.
Paquette homered in the eighth to make it a 12-10 game.
Stony Brook travels to Albany for a four-game series this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 pm.
