Senior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) had two hits and three RBI but Albany scored six runs in the sixth to rally for an 11-10 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team in the first game of an America East Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Great Danes then completed the sweep with a 14-10 win in the second game. Stony Brook is now 16-19 overall and 6-4 in the America East.
The Seawolves jumped to an early lead in the first game, scoring two runs in the first on run-scoring singles from Dyer and Carmona. Albany got a run back in the bottom of the first but the Seawolves then struck for six runs in the second which was capped by a two-run single from freshman Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario).
Albany struck for four runs in the fifth highlighted by a bases-loaded triple from Pete DiResta but Carmona hit a two-run single in the sixth to give the Seawolves a 10-5 lead. The Great Danes rallied to take the lead in the sixth, scoring six runs.
Brian Bullard and Brendan Rowland each had two-run singles in the inning and Ralph Keppler knocked in the go-ahead run with a one-out RBI single. Kevin Bartlett then retired the Seawolves in order in the seventh to secure the victory for the Great Danes.
Stony Brook again grabbed the early lead in the second game as senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit a solo home run with one out in the second. Albany responded with four runs in the third on run-scoring hits from Nolan Gaige, Bullard, DiResta and Rowland.
The Seawolves got a run back in the fifth on an RBI double from Tissenbaum but the Great Danes scored three runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a two-run single from Keppler to take a 7-2 lead. Albany then added three runs in the sixth without registering a hit.
A Stephan run-scoring single in the seventh brought SBU within 10-4 but the Great Danes answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh with a help of another run-scoring hit from DiResta. SBU scored two more runs in the eighth on RBI singles from sophomores Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) before Albany scored two unearned runs to take a 14-6 advantage.
Stony Brook scored four runs in the ninth but Greg Lutton came in and recorded the final two outs of the game as Albany earned a split of the four-game series. Stephan had three hits and three RBI in the second game for the Seawolves, who had 15 hits in each game.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, hosting Fairfield at University Field. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
