Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with two RBI as Stony Brook University's softball team took a pair of games from Lafayette on Tuesday afternoon at University Field. Senior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) allowed just one hit in the 8-0 (5) victory in game one, and junior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) allowed just three in the 4-1 win in game two. Stony Brook improves to 15-11 (3-3 America East) with the victories.

Four of the first five hitters Stony Brook sent to the plate scored in the first inning of game one. The Seawolves took advantage of two errors by the Leopards to score three unearned runs. SBU would tack on three more runs in the second inning to stretch its lead to 7-0. Karath and senior Crista Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y.) each had an RBI in the first and second innings.

Stony Brook's final run of the game came on an RBI single by senior Kendall Blumenthal (Frederick, Md.) in the third.

Struzenberg, who issued five walks in the first two innings, had to battle early but eventually settled down, retiring nine straight at one point. Lafayette's lone hit came on a sharp single back up in the middle with two outs in the fifth.

In game two, Karath opened the third inning with an infield single to the right side. With one out, Lafayette decided to intentionally walk senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Junior Brijette Martin (New York, N.Y.) quickly made the Leopards pay for that decision with a bunt single that scored Karath from third. Two batters later, freshman Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) singled down the leftfield line, plating two more runs and giving SBU a 3-0 advantage.

Stony Brook would add one more run in the sixth inning on a double to left-centerfield by Kavitsky.

Matthes, who also had a no-hitter going into the final inning, recorded five strikeouts in her complete-game effort. Lafayette strung three singles together in the bottom of the seventh to score its lone run.

Stony Brook returns to America East action this weekend, when it hosts Hartford. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
