Cambridge, Mass. -
Sophomore Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) and freshman Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario), of the Stony Brook University baseball team, have been named the America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Monday. The duo helped lead the Seawolves to a three-game sweep of UMBC over the weekend.
Tropeano hurled a four-hit shutout in the Seawolves 17-0 win over the Retrievers on Saturday. The right-hander scattered four singles over his 7.0 innings and struck out 11. It was his third complete game in his last four starts and the third time this season he has struck out at least 10 batters. Tropeano ranks second in the America East in earned run average (2.86) and leads the conference with 75 strikeouts.
Nivins hit .625 with two home runs, six runs scored and 10 RBI against UMBC. He went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI in the win over UMBC on Saturday and then drove in four runs including a three-run home run in the game two win. In the series finale, he hit another three-run homer in Stony Brook's seven-run fourth. Nivins leads the team in home runs (seven) and RBI (39).
The Seawolves return to Saturday, hosting the Hartford Hawks for the beginning of a four-game series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
