Cambridge, Mass. -
Senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) and freshman William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.), of the Stony Brook University baseball team, have been named the America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Monday. The duo helped lead the Seawolves to a four-game sweep of Hartford over the weekend.
Stephan hit .538 with two home runs, eight RBI and nine runs scored in the four-game set against Hartford. The senior outfielder hit a solo home run in Stony Brook's 3-2 victory over Hartford on Saturday. He then had a go-ahead two-run double in the Seawolves' 6-4 win in the weekend finale. His 31 RBI during conference play is tied for the league lead.
Carmona hit .692 against the Hawks to push his average to an America East best .405. He is hitting .493 during conference play and hit the game-tying home run with one out in the seventh and final inning in the Seawolves 3-2 over Hartford on Saturday. He also earned a save with a scoreless ninth in the 6-4 win in the series finale.
Currently in second place in the conference and winner of seven straight, the Seawolves can clinch the America East regular season title and the right to host the 2010 America East Baseball Championship on May 26-28 with a sweep of first-place Binghamton at University Field this weekend. First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
